History lessons

I demand that everyone (but mainly those working in video games stores) be given history lessons. All I ask when I go into a shop is that the staff have some knowledge of what they are selling. I'm not asking that they know the in-depth ins and outs of video game history, however I would like some general knowledge. Here is why.

I do not wish to go into a store and wait around 20 minutes for someone to find the games I wish to purchase.

I do not wish to have to explain during that there were consoles and video games that existed before the Playstation.

I do not wish to have to explain what the Master System and Mega Drive are or the market situation they existed within.

I do not wish to have to explain that the cartridge being held up and then pushed into the game box is a Master System cartridge and not a Mega Drive cartridge. Regardless of them fitting into the box, they are not the same.

I do not wish to have to offer to come and look for the cartridge myself.

Surely it's not too much to ask?

I totally understand what you mean Nat.

i find it worse to be on the other end of the stick, with some Loser who thinks he knows more than you. i dont really have a problem with some 16 year old girl, on minimum wage, stumbling around to find, that sacred copy of "enduro racer" because any word that isnt "playstation 2" is usually met with a look of utter contempt, but its ok, i realize not everyone spent there school holidays indoors with the curtains pulled trying to get that final emerald on Sonic...

However, some loser who will unload his entire knowledge of gaming on you. really pisses me off
Now i know lots about videogames, infact, shitloads, but i dont go shouting it about, unless one of these tards goes on and on, continuly trying to outdo your gaming knowledge.

example, months ago when i brought Gradius 5, i had trouble finding it, so i asked a "worker" if they had it. "of course" with a smug grin you just wanna punch off his face, "its here, but it aint much cop" Really? THE game of 2004? the game id been waiting 3 years to play?, the game EDGE gave 9/10? "i dont care shoot em ups are my fav" i said, you want "GTA SA on PS2" he says "awsome game", expecting a "brilliant, thanks" reply, except, i gave a formal schooling to the twat, who it turns out, had never even played gradius 5, but heard, that it was to hard...

Game store workers, think they are better than you, in their min they are better than you, and just because you want a game thats not GTA or Halo, they think you are retarded or have no clue about games.

Hey, i should work in a game shop, that way, i could tell parents and teenagers that "GTA SA" is just the same as "GTA VC" and thats only £4.99 in the bargain bin, i probably get sacked, but hey, the kids u'd love me :)

Just dont get me started on fingering the cds as they put them into the case...

Formulated from the mind of TheEvilDead, Shoot em up fanatic & game store's worst nightmare

I agree with you there mate, I hate talking to know-it-alls. I had the problem when I went to buy Rez. Some fool in GAME told me it had not been released and then proceeded to tell me that Rez had been cancelled.

I do think the state our video game shops (the major chains mainly) are in are appalling. I don't demand in-depth knowledge to be known or spouted back at me, but I would like people to know the difference between things. It's not as if you are selling anything else there.

Also your story of Gradius V is one of the things I hate the most. I refuse to shop in GAME now due to the way they push shit on you and belittle everything else. Once upon a time I went in to buy PSO and spent 20 minutes discussing the game with staff and how cool it's going to be. I go back now and you mention the Dreamcast and all you get is a blank stare.

"Hello, do you have any Dreamcast games"
"..."
"Sega Dreamcast games?"
"You mean Playstation?"
"No, Sega Dreamcast. It was out before the PS2 an..."
"Ah you want a PS2, here you go"
"No I said the Dreamcast was out before the PS2"
"I don't understand sir"

And the conversation goes in roundabouts from there.

On top of that I hate the way they push games on you. There is only one decent bloke working in my local GAME (only time I ever go in one is if a friend is going to buy something from there). He seems to be the only chap to tell it as it is.

Random dude: "Hey I see you are buying X game, you can buy this cheap-clone-of-GTA-or-some-other-such-nonsense and save money, it's one of the best games I've ever played"
Honest bloke: "It's really lame, don't bother buying it."

Surely a balance must be struck. As I said I don't want to have to be asked to explain what I'm buying and then be asked for more information on it. As much as I enjoy talking about the old days, I only want to go in, browse for a few minutes, buy what I want and be out of there sharpish.
I don't want to have thrown at me a barrage of facts that in a lot of cases are wrong anyways.

Unfortunately, we live in an era when Official Playstation Magazine and FHM holds more gravitas in terms of game scores than Edge or Games amongst the public at large and it seems the employees of the major video game chains.
